The shape of a Mykonos night
Nights here run late and in stages. Beach clubs on the south coast carry the party from mid-afternoon to sunset. Little Venice takes over for the sunset hour. Dinner is rarely before nine. Chora's bars fill from eleven, and the clubs — in town and on Paradise Beach — do not really start until after one.
Sunset in Little Venice
The row of old captains' houses hanging over the water below the windmills is the island's sunset gallery. Bars along the front put tables on the sea wall; arrive an hour before sunset for a seat, or watch from the windmill ridge for free and go down for a drink afterwards. Prices reflect the view.
The lanes of Chora
After dinner the action moves inland to the lanes around Matogianni and the small squares behind the harbour: cocktail bars, a long-standing gay bar scene near the Paraportiani church, and clubs that open around midnight. Everything is within a few minutes' walk, which is the point — you drift rather than plan.
Beach clubs and Paradise
Psarou is the polished beach-club day; Paraga has the headland sunset club; Paradise and Super Paradise are the party beaches with music from the afternoon and open-air clubs late into the night. Dress codes, minimum spends and guest lists apply at the bigger names in high season.
Sea taxis stop running in the evening, so plan a bus or a booked taxi back from the beaches.
Getting home
- Stay in Chora if nights out are the point — walking home solves everything.
- From a beach base, agree a return with a taxi company in advance or take the last bus; late-night taxis at the rank are a long wait in August.
- Do not ride a scooter home after drinking. The roads are narrow and unlit.
Season and events
The scene runs at full strength from late June to early September and fades quickly after. Festival weeks — notably XLSIOR in late August — sell out hotels island-wide.
