South coast: sheltered, organised, connected
The southern beaches face away from the summer north wind, which is why they are the developed ones. From west to east: Ornos (family bay and sea-taxi hub), Psarou (beach clubs), Platis Gialos (long family beach, other sea-taxi hub), Paraga (relaxed with a sunset club), Paradise (party), Super Paradise (party, historically gay-friendly), Agrari (quieter) and Elia (longest, calmest of the big beaches). Buses and sea taxis link them in season.
West coast: sunset beaches
Agios Ioannis and Kapari, south-west of Ornos, face Delos and the setting sun. Agios Ioannis has a small organised beach and a couple of resorts and restaurants; Kapari is smaller and unorganised. Megali Ammos, just south of the windmills, is the town beach — wide, sandy, five minutes from Chora and often overlooked.
North coast: wild, windy, worth it
Panormos is the north's organised beach, with fine sand and a large beach club. Around the headland, Agios Sostis is undeveloped — no sunbeds, a famous grill taverna up the hill. Ftelia is the windsurfing bay with one boho beach bar. Fokos, at the end of a rough road past the reservoir, is the wildest of all, with a single taverna. None are served by buses; all are exposed when the meltemi blows.
East coast: space and water sports
Kalafatis is a long, breezy beach with a water-sports centre, a few tavernas and family hotels, reached via Ano Mera. Agia Anna next door is a small cove with a couple of well-regarded seafood tavernas. Kalo Livadi, between Elia and Kalafatis, is a long sandy bay with a beach club and calmer water.
Choosing by the day you want
- Calm water with children: Ornos, Platis Gialos, Agios Ioannis.
- Beach-club scene: Psarou, Paraga, Panormos.
- Party: Paradise, Super Paradise.
- Quiet on the south coast: Agrari, Elia (eastern end).
- Undeveloped and wild: Agios Sostis, Fokos, Kapari.
- Windsurfing and kitesurfing: Ftelia, Kalafatis.
- Windy day (strong meltemi): Ornos, Psarou, Platis Gialos.
Beach practicalities
- Organised beaches rent sunbeds by the pair; front rows at famous clubs are reserved in advance and often carry a minimum spend.
- Sea taxis and buses run in season only, roughly May to early October.
- Shade is scarce on unorganised beaches — bring an umbrella to Agios Sostis or Fokos.
- Several boat trips visit beaches you cannot reach by land, notably on Rhenia.
