Wind, water sports and a quieter island away from the beach-club circuit
Kalafatis faces east on the far side of the island, which gives it two things the party beaches lack: a reliable afternoon breeze and relative calm. Windsurfing and kitesurfing schools work the bay, dive centres operate from the small harbour at Agia Anna next door, and the beach is long, sandy and only lightly developed.
It suits families with older children, anyone who wants to learn a sport, and people who would rather be near Ano Mera's tavernas than Chora's cocktail bars. A handful of resort hotels and simple rooms sit along the bay.
The peninsula at the southern end, with the little chapel and cove of Agia Anna, is one of the more peaceful corners of Mykonos in August.
Beach
Long, sandy, exposed to an afternoon wind that suits sailing sports. Mornings are calm and good for swimming.
Nights
Very quiet. A few beach restaurants; Ano Mera's square is the nearest evening scene.
Getting around
Seasonal buses from the Old Port station in town via Ano Mera; a car is much easier. No sea-taxi service.
