The monastery's icon is carried through the village, and the square fills with long tables, live music and dancing in the evening — a panigyri in the traditional sense, open to everyone. It is the one night of high summer when Ano Mera, not Chora, is the centre of the island.

15 August is also a national holiday and the peak of the Greek domestic season. Ferries, hotels and restaurants are at their fullest; book transport and tables well ahead, and expect buses to Ano Mera to be packed in the evening.
