At midnight on Holy Saturday the priest announces 'Christos Anesti' and the flame passes candle to candle through the crowd outside every church. Fireworks and firecrackers follow, then families break the fast with magiritsa soup.
Easter Sunday is a day-long meal. Some villages, notably Ano Mera around the Panagia Tourliani monastery, host communal lamb roasts with music. Restaurants in Chora that are open often serve a set Easter menu — book ahead.
Easter marks the informal opening of the season: hotels and beach restaurants that have been closed all winter open their doors in Holy Week, and ferry timetables step up.
