Orthodox Good Friday — Epitaphios processions in Chora

On Good Friday evening each parish carries its flower-covered Epitaphios (bier of Christ) through the lanes by candlelight. In Chora several processions weave through the town and meet near the harbour.

The processions begin after the evening service, usually once it is dark, and move slowly through the whitewashed lanes with chanting and candles. Visitors are welcome to follow quietly; dress modestly and do not block the route for photographs.

Greece's national day commemorating the 1940 refusal of the Italian ultimatum. Schoolchildren and local associations parade through Chora after a morning church service; shops close and the island is quiet.

On 6 January a priest throws a cross into the harbour and local swimmers dive to retrieve it — the Theophany blessing of the waters, held in every Greek port town.
